Which rollator is the right one?
Guide

Rollators: standard, premium or lightweight?

A rollator is a valuable support when walking or standing for people with restricted mobility. For many, it is even indispensable for staying independent and mobile in everyday life. Whether it is due to an illness, during recovery, or if you start feeling unsteady when walking in old age, a rollator can act as a practical everyday companion for walks or shopping.

This is what a standard rollator offers:

  • robust steel frame
  • assistance when walking
  • can be used indoors and outdoors
  • parking and driving brake
  • individually height-adjustable handles
  • a seat to rest
  • a cane holder, basket and tray

A standard model can be completely sufficient if you are satisfied with this equipment and its functionalities.

4 reasons to spend more money on a rollator

Don't get us wrong: standard rollators serve their purpose and have all the important functions on board. However, there are also reasons why it is worth spending a little more money on a rollator.

Here are 4 possible reasons why it is worth investing more:
1. Quality and comfort

Standard rollators meet the basic needs, but may not be as comfortable as higher-end models for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring gravel and rough trails. These usually have larger wheels with soft or even pneumatic tires to protect the joints. In addition, these models usually have a padded seat to make the break even more comfortable.

2. Lightweight and transportation

Higher-class rollators have an aluminum or even carbon frame, which means that the aid is significantly lighter than standard models. Due to the steel construction, basic models weigh between 9.0-10.0 kilograms, while rollators made of aluminum or carbon weigh less than 7.0 kilograms. The significantly lower weight makes it much easier for you if you want to stow your rollator in the trunk, for example.

3. Design and aesthetics

Such a chic rollator in a particularly attractive design and a noble, fresh or cheerful color makes a difference. If you want to stand out from the norm here, you can go for models that offer a wider range of aesthetic options.

4. Diversity

An included back strap, a mesh pocket or a chic closed shopping bag instead of a wire basket – unlike standard models, you have already included high-quality accessories in the scope of delivery. You can also buy other tasteful accessories at a low price, such as an umbrella, a bell or a front light.

Rollators: What models are available?

There is a variety of rollators on the market, offering different designs, features, materials, and price ranges.

Here are some of the most common models:

Lightweight rollators

Designed for individuals who want to remain active and mobile, lightweight rollators are a great choice. They are ideal for people who frequently need to take their rollator with them.

Our ultra-lightweight rollator model, the Nitro SL, for example, weighs just 5.5 kg, providing ease of maneuverability and transport.

Premium rollators are also lightweight and have an aluminum or even carbon frame. This makes the rollator stand out visually.

With our premium model Nitro you are definitely making the right decision in this segment!

Indoor rollators

These rollators are specially designed for indoor use. Due to their narrower design, they are significantly more manoeuvrable than conventional rollators and make it easier for you to move through narrow spaces or doors.

If you need a rollator especially for indoor use, we recommend our indoor rollator Roomba. Our Roomba has a pocket and a tray with a recess for cups or glasses.

Other models

In addition to the models explained in more detail above, there are many other rollators for special requirements.

Tip: How to set the rollator correctly

In order to use a rollator optimally, it must be perfectly adjusted to the user. And this is how it works:

  • Stand upright in walking direction between the two rear wheels of the rollator. Let your arms hang loosely beside your body.

  • Now adjust the height of the hand grips so that they are at wrist height. This gives you enough space to be able to grip the handles firmly and safely with your hands.

  • When you grip the brakes, you should still have firm contact with the grip.

  • Always look straight ahead when walking.

Also important: Test the brakes beforehand so that you get a feel for them and know exactly how hard you have to press.

What should you pay attention to when buying a rollator?

A rollator relieves the leg muscles by transferring the load via the shoulder girdle to the arms and hands and finally to the rollator. Therefore, for all walking aids, rollators and walking sticks, the handles that transfer the load from the body to the aid should be ergonomically well designed and adapted. Especially when those affected only have little remaining strength, every percentage point that can be used to improve the power transmission is important.

The ergonomic handles and the comfortable backrest of our super-light Nitro SL can be individually adjusted to the body size, for example. So there is an optimal power transmission, which relieves you.
